Autumn came quickly this year. Before we knew it hedgerows were bursting with blackberries, the leaves turned and fell into pillowy piles and no sooner had August bank holiday come and gone and there was a certain fresh chill in the air.
A scorching summer burnt itself out, giving way to a premature autumn and all of a sudden we find ourselves nearing the end of October. On the farm, the change in season feels very immediate. Burning landscapes, wilting flowers, and low hanging sunshine bring wistful thoughts of bracing walks, roaring fires and Black Cow nightcaps. The longer nights close in as the clocks go back while we sleep. Our Black Cow Negroni really comes into its own, perfectly packed up in our Bill Amberg Bottle Carrier, providing much needed sustenance to autumn activities.
As we slowly start to retreat inside for comfort, activity outside seems to speed up. Orchards ripe and fruiting with plentiful bundles of plums, figs, damsons, quinces, apples and pears. Food and drink gets a bit richer, infused with warming spices. Our Black Cow Christmas spirit really shines at this time of year, a heady infused mix of cloves and figs, orange and cinnamon combined with our signature vodka. Here we mull it with freshly pressed apple juice for a comforting pick me up on a stormy day.
Then the end of the month rolls round and ablaze landscapes cast long shadows, turning into candlelit evenings and cosy get-togethers. The return of the dinner party and trying out new Black Cow cocktail recipes with friends, then rounding off evenings tucking into our award winning Black Cow cheddar. Nights out, hunkering down in low lit cocktail bars. Weekend days spent rambling for hours exploring the West Dorset coastline, gulping in crisp salty air, taking respite only to hide out by the fire in a local pub.
